YORK AREA, Va. – Virginia State Police say alcohol and speed were factors in a large tractor-trailer and bus crash in York County that left three people dead and 22 others injured.

According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya with VSP, the accident happened at 1:48 am. Friday on Interstate 64 East at the 241 mile marker. It lasted until about 11:30 am. for state troopers to reopen the eastbound lanes of the freeway.

On Friday, family members identified the victims as Xzavier Raquan Evans, 25, of Norfolk, Montia Bouie, 19, of Chesapeake, and Jontae Kaalib Russell, 21, of Norfolk.

Virginia State Police sent out a press release Sunday identifying the victims, but with a slightly different spelling of the two men’s names than the one provided by the family.

Based on the preliminary investigation, VSP said the tractor and bus were traveling east on I-64 and when the bus crossed the path of the tractor, they collided. The impact sent the tractor-trailer into the median, where it hit a curb.

Anaya said the tractor driver was taken to a hospital but is expected to be OK. The bus driver and 20 passengers were also hospitalized and are expected to survive.

State police said alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, and charges are expected to be filed after investigators speak with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
